Meeting South Africa’s Growing Demand for Processed Macadamias
South Africa stands as the world’s leading producer and exporter of macadamia nuts. With production estimated between 90,000 and 94,000 metric tons in 2025 and expectations for the crop to double over the next ten years, the demand for high-efficiency processing equipment has never been greater. Macadamias account for the largest share of South Africa's nut exports, with strong demand from Asian and European markets.
However, many South African macadamia producers still face significant challenges in their processing operations—challenges that directly impact profitability and product quality.
Macadamia Processing Facility
Our client is a well-established macadamia processing facility located in Cape Town, one of South Africa’s key agricultural and export hubs. The facility processes macadamia nuts sourced from local growers across the Western Cape and surrounding regions, supplying roasted products to both domestic retailers and international export markets.
As production volumes increased and export opportunities expanded, the client recognised that their existing processing methods were no longer sustainable. They needed a modern, industrial-scale solution to remain competitive in an increasingly demanding global market.
Before partnering with Gelgoog Group, the Cape Town facility faced three primary challenges that were limiting their growth and profitability:
Labour is one of the two biggest expenses when running a nut processing facility. With manual roasting operations requiring multiple operators per shift, the client’s labour costs were eating into already tight margins. As the South African macadamia industry faces tighter margins and structural pressure on the value chain, reducing operational costs has become essential for survival and growth.
Using traditional batch roasting methods, the client struggled with inconsistent roasting results. Some nuts would be over-roasted while others remained underdone, leading to product quality variations that hurt brand reputation and limited access to premium export markets. Consistent colour, aroma, and texture are critical for retail and export-grade macadamia products.
With growing domestic and export demand—South Africa exported 31 percent of its shelled macadamia nuts to the United States alone in 2024—the client’s existing setup simply could not keep pace. Manual and semi-automated processes created production bottlenecks, limiting their ability to fulfil larger orders and expand into new markets.
After thorough consultation and needs assessment, Gelgoog Group designed and delivered a complete continuous macadamia roasting production line tailored to the Cape Town facility’s specific requirements.

Unlike batch roasters that require stopping between cycles, Gelgoog’s continuous system enables non-stop operation—nuts are fed continuously at one end and emerge perfectly roasted at the other. This dramatically increases throughput and eliminates production bottlenecks.
The machine features a reasonable heat distribution design that ensures airflow uniformity throughout the roasting chamber. Every nut receives consistent heat exposure, eliminating the uneven roasting that plagued the client’s previous operations. The result: consistently golden, evenly roasted macadamia nuts batch after batch.
The intelligent control system allows operators to set and maintain precise roasting temperatures. Whether the client needs low-temperature drying or high-temperature roasting, the system delivers accurate, repeatable results. This precision is essential for preserving the delicate flavour and nutritional value of macadamia nuts.
Operating costs were a major concern for the client. Gelgoog’s roaster addresses this with:
Heat recirculation technology that reuses roasting air to decrease energy consumption
Insulated zones that minimise heat loss and reduce running costs
Dual temperature control heating that reduces energy waste
The system features a high degree of automation with thermostats and programmable controls. Operators can set parameters and let the machine handle the rest, significantly reducing the need for manual intervention and lowering labour costs.
