In the feed processing process there may be a number of ingredients that require some form of processing. These feed ingredients include coarse cereal grains, corn which require particle size reduction which will improve the performance of the ingredient and increase the nutritive value, using hammer-mills is a good way to achieve this particle size reduction.

There are two main types of hammer mill, there are either based on a gravity system or a cyclonic system. This difference does not relate to the actual process of size reduction but the removal of particles post size reduction. A gravity hammer mill basically means that the material flows through the machine only by gravity and we then use a screw auger in the base to collect the material and move it onto the pellet mill. The advantages of this system is there is less dust which is better for operators and in keeping dust our of the finished pellets. The other version of a hammer mill uses a fan and a cyclone separator to collect the material from the based of the material and deposit it into the pellet press. The problem with this is that cyclones are not 100% efficient at separating material from the air flow. Therefore fine dust will leave the top of the cyclone.
Operating Principle of Hammer Mill
In the hammer mill, the motor drives the rotor to rotate at a high speed through the belt, and on the rotor there are series of hammers. When the materials get into the working area of hammers, the rotating hammers with high rotation speed are crushing them, the crushed products meeting the required size can be discharged by the outlet and become the final products, the large size products are brought back to the crushing area by the hammers for being re-crushed until they reached the required size.
